WHAT EXACTLY IS A MERV RATING
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the primary rating system used in the industry, both domestically and internationally. Established by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers), MERV rates a filter’s ability to capture and hold particles and pollutants. The higher the rating the more particles the filter removes from the air before it recycles through your HVAC’s blower leaving your home a healthier place to live. Learn More.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS YOUR AIR FILTER?
|MERV 8-10||MERV 11-13||Carbon Filters||MERV 14-20|
|Most residential home air systems can adequately remove airborne contaminants like pollen, dust, and lint from the air with a filter rated between MERV 8-10.
This base level items are why the MERV 8 is a good basic filter. It takes care of most people’s basic air filtering needs.
|Most residential home air systems can adequately remove airborne contaminants and odors with a filter rated between MERV 11-13.
Filters over a MERV 11 can actually provide added stress from being too restrictive and can starve and harm your home’s HVAC system. Which is why we recommend using a carbon filter for any filtration needs covered by a MERV 13, like odors and smoking.
|The carbon filter cleans the air as it passes through rather than attempting to capture the odor particle. Think of it like carbon filtered water…it tastes smoother and cleaner than a simple screen filter because it cleans rather than captures.
The Indoor Wellness Carbon+ Premium Filter (a MERV 13 Substitute) does something the others don’t—it clean odors and smells. It actually does this even better than competing MERV 13 air filters (which is one of the reasons why we’ve opted to sell this over a MERV 13).
|MERV 14-20 are typically found in hospital and general surgery settings. The higher the MERV rating on a filter, the fewer dust particles and other contaminants can pass through it.|
